Engineering Academy on Site Training
Do experienced engineers need training?
We recently delivered a successful on-site setting out and construction layout training session for engineers at Kilnbridge Construction Services on one of their major live infrastructure projects. The session was organised through Engineering Academy and focused on improving practical site delivery, construction workflow efficiency, and advanced use of digital setting out technology in real construction conditions.
The training brought together a mixed group of engineers, including both recent graduates and highly experienced site engineers. This combination created a dynamic learning environment where different levels of experience could be supported simultaneously. The aim of the session was not only to introduce and reinforce the fundamentals for newer engineers, but also to challenge experienced engineers to refine their working methods and explore more efficient ways of delivering setting out tasks on site.
Key Focus Areas
A key focus of the training was the optimisation of daily engineering workflows using modern digital instruments, including Leica Geosystems iCON layout systems. Rather than concentrating purely on theory, the session was fully practical and based on real site conditions, allowing engineers to directly apply techniques to the type of challenges they face during live construction activities. Throughout the day, we explored advanced functions of the instruments, shared practical shortcuts, and demonstrated approaches that help reduce setup time while improving accuracy and consistency in setting out operations.
What made the session particularly valuable was the exchange of experience between engineers. Even those with years of site experience were able to gain new insights into workflow improvements and alternative methods for tackling common construction layout tasks. At the same time, graduate engineers benefited from seeing how experienced professionals approach problem-solving in real time, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and practical site delivery.
Although it was a single-day visit, the impact of the training was significant. It provided an opportunity to step away from routine site pressures and focus entirely on improving efficiency, understanding equipment more deeply, and discussing real engineering challenges in detail. It was also encouraging to see how quickly engineers adapted to new techniques and immediately began applying them during the session.
Important Mileston for Academy
For Engineering Academy, this training represented an important milestone, as it marked one of the first formal on-site training sessions delivered directly to engineers already working within the industry. Moving beyond student-focused education, this step reflects a shift towards supporting active professionals on live projects and contributing directly to construction productivity and skills development in the field.
Finally, I would like to sincerely thank Ben White and the entire Kilnbridge team for the trust, support, and opportunity to deliver this training. It was a privilege to work with such a skilled group of engineers and to share practical knowledge developed over years of site experience. This collaboration represents a strong foundation for future on-site training sessions aimed at improving construction efficiency, accuracy, and overall site delivery standards.
