Why Waterproofing Is Critical to Long-Term Structural Protection

Is Protecting Structures Really That Important?

After working closely with Premcrete for nearly a year, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: waterproofing is one of the most important aspects of any construction project, yet it is often overlooked until problems arise.

Throughout the year, I’ve had the opportunity to visit numerous construction sites alongside the Premcrete team, supporting installer training, sharing best practices, and discussing ways to optimise waterproofing solutions. These visits have given me a real appreciation for the skill, dedication, and attention to detail required to protect structures properly from water ingress and long-term damage.

One of the highlights of this collaboration has been working alongside Tyler and the wider Premcrete team as they deliver practical training on site. What stands out is their commitment to ensuring that installers not only understand the products they are using but also the importance of correct installation. Waterproofing is not simply about applying a product; it’s about understanding how the entire protection system works and ensuring every detail is completed to the highest standard.

Poor installation or overlooked details can lead to costly repairs

What I find particularly impressive is the pride many installers take in their work. You can see that they genuinely care about quality. Even during the challenging groundworks phase of a project, where weather conditions are often working against them, teams continue to focus on achieving the best possible result. Anyone who has worked on site knows how difficult it can be to maintain high standards when dealing with rain, mud, tight deadlines, and constantly changing site conditions. Seeing teams consistently deliver quality workmanship under those circumstances deserves real recognition.

The reality is that waterproofing failures can have significant consequences. Poor installation or overlooked details can lead to costly repairs, programme delays, and long-term issues for building owners. That’s why quality waterproofing solutions, combined with proper training and installation practices, are so critical to the success of modern construction projects.

Support of the Academy

Beyond the technical side of waterproofing, one of the aspects I value most about this partnership is Premcrete’s commitment to supporting the next generation of construction professionals. As a supporter of the Construction Engineering Academy, Premcrete has played an important role in helping aspiring engineers and construction professionals gain knowledge, confidence, and industry exposure.

Through their support, students have access to valuable insights into real construction projects, specialist waterproofing systems, and the standards required to succeed in today’s industry. For many people starting their careers, these opportunities can make a significant difference in helping them secure their first role and begin their professional journey.

I would like to personally thank Premcrete for their continued support of the Academy and for their commitment to raising standards across the construction industry. Their focus on quality, training, and innovation demonstrates exactly why protecting structures properly is so important—not just for today’s projects, but for the long-term performance and durability of the buildings we create.

When it comes to construction, waterproofing is far more than a finishing detail. It is an investment in the future of the structure, and getting it right from the beginning is one of the smartest decisions any project team can make.
